Forward Response to Bill C6
At our family update we shared with you our concern regarding Bill C6 a piece of legislation that is currently awaiting third and final reading before the House of Commons.
Our concern with Bill C6 is that, as currently written, it has the potential to criminalize pastors, counsellors and even parents who seek to teach the biblical position on gender and sexuality as understood for most of Christian history.
As such, at our family update, we encouraged you to consider reaching out to your local MP to share with them your concern about Bill C6 and the danger it poses to religious liberty and freedom in Canada.
In order to help you craft a letter to send to your MP we have included links below to a couple of tools that we hope will be of help including a sample letter, a link to send a letter directly to your MP through Easymail, and a copy of the letter that was sent on behalf of our church to our local MPs in Cambridge and Kitchener.
If you are going to send a letter, please make sure you do so in a way that reflects well on Jesus. That means:
1. Be gracious and respectful.
In his letter to the church in Colossae Paul urged his readers to “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Colossians 4:5-6.
Always remember that every person we engage with is a person that is made in the image of God and that Jesus died for. Our battle is not against flesh and blood, it’s against principalities and powers. People are not the enemy they are the prize Jesus died to win.
When he sent his disciples out Jesus told them he was sending them out as “sheep in the midst of wolves” and so he exhorted them to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
Consider the language you use and in attempting to shine light on the truth try to find common ground. We agree that conversion therapy which defined as coercive and involuntary practices that have the intent of forcibly changing someone’s sexual orientation have no place within our community. We also agree with the importance of our Canadian charter of rights and freedoms which upholds both freedom of religion and freedom of speech, both of which are threatened by this bill.
