No Detours (Kirk Giles) | Set your Sights

In this passage we encounter three would-be followers of Jesus, and every one of them wants a detour before he follows. One word keeps surfacing. First. Let me first bury my father. Let me first say farewell. Each request sounds reasonable, but each is a detour. Jesus refuses the detour every single time. Here’s the thing though, all of us get detoured sometimes. Jesus alone is the only person who ever walked the whole road with no detours at all. He fixed his sights and never once looked back, all the way to death, and he did it so that failures like us could belong to him. He had nowhere to lay his head so that we could have a home with him forever. This week let’s call people to name their own detours: comfort, family expectation, keeping their options open, and lay them down for the sake of Jesus and his mission. This is Seek First lived out.
